Wild diet: Brown Kiwi: invertebrates with a small proportion of fruit, seeds and leaves. Invertebrates include bugs (Hemiptera), larval and adult beetles (Coleoptera), and cranely larvae (Tipulidae); also earthworms (Oligochaeta) and spiders (Araneae), snails (Mollusca), amphipods, millipedes (Diplopoda) and centipedes (Chilopoda). Okarito Kiwi: no information recorded, suspected to be similar to other species. Little Spotted Kiwi: invertebrates, leaves, fallen fruit and fern sporangia. Invertebrates usually between 5-40mm in size. Great Spotted Kiwi: invertebrates, including Coleoptera beetle larvae and earthworms. In summer their diet includes large crickets and spiders as well as snails and freshwater crayfish (Parastacidae) taken when they leave flooded streams. Fallen fruit and leaves may also be eaten.
Feeding strategy: Detects prey by smell, nocturnal
