Eudyptes chrysocome
Sphenisciformes - Spheniscus
Wild diet: Crustaceans (mainly Euphausiids), Fish, Squid and Cephalopods. Crustaceans make up 90% of diet but have been seen to favour squid. Data comparison from studies at the Faukland Island and Marion Island show that Euphausiids are the main food of the Rockhopper throughout its range- however the prey species recorded varies from site to site- showing a local difference in prey abundance and distribution.
Feeding strategy: Rockhopper Penguins are opportunistic feeders- normally feeding on shoaling and swarming zooplankton. They make daily trips to the sea to feed during the breeding season and normally feed in small groups. Foraging dives rarely exceed 100m in depth, however they do have a fairly large feeding range.
Wild weight ranges: 2.4-3kg
